Summary of Clinical Experience
During all my appointments, I have gained valuable experience in the assessment, investigation and management of a wide range of acute and chronic medical and surgical conditions, as well as leading a national trauma unit whilst on call during multiple casualty situations. I am skilled in a variety of practical procedures and also to maximise my organisational and time management skills in what have been very busy but enjoyable jobs.
Published Audit
I have proposed, undertaken, analysed, supervised, presented and published several completed and resampled audits which have resulted in a change of practice within our surgical directorates:
Sept 2006 – Sept 2007: Audit of needle stick injuries at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester. Presented regionally and currently undergoing resampling after education pamphlet.
Aug 2002 - Jan 2004: Audit of the complications of TRUS prostate biopsies: Audit cycle completed and resampled, results presented regionally. Article under review for publication in peer review journal.
Aug 2002 - Nov 2003: Audit of True Echo Harmonics & Colour Flow Doppler Studies versus traditional Grey Scale USS in the detection of prostate cancer at TRUS biopsy: Audit cycle completed and resampled, results presented internationally, BAUS June 2004 and published internationally, British Journal of Urology June 2004 Supplement.
Feb 2003 - Sep 2003: Audit of the role of plain radiography in the acute abdomen: Audit cycle completed and resampled, results presented regionally. Article under review for publication in peer review journal.
Other audits that I have completed or assisted in the compilation of :
Sept 2010: Bone Banking Audit - North Hampshire Hospital Basingstoke
Sept 2007: Needle stick injuries – Royal Hampshire County Hospital
May 2006: VTE prophylaxis compliance audit – North Hampshire Hospital
Aug 2003: Compiled and presented the Institute of Urology TVT audit.
Oct 2002: Compiled the Dorset section of the Wessex radical prostatectomy audit.
May 2002: Assisted in the compilation of the Dorset Air Ambulance trauma audit.

Research
Throughout my career, I have always been interested in and participated in research at local and international level. I find it a very interesting, satisfying and essential part of surgical training:
As an SHO, I proposed and set up a study looking into long-term follow-up of patients who underwent Orthodesign Total Hip Replacements at Dorset County Hospital. The project was the first of its kind undertaken internationally and was approved by the local and regional ethical committees. This 2-year study looked into long term success and patient satisfaction with this particular type of implant. The results of our study have been presented at international meetings in Southampton and Belgium.
As a Specialist Registrar, I have assisted in the set up of an ongoing prospective double blind randomised placebo controlled trial looking into the effectiveness of continuous local anaesthetic ankle block infusion versus a single bolus block technique in the management of post operative pain in foot and ankle surgery at North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke.
I have also completed a fully funded (Stryker International), full time, 5 year MD project in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College, London. Under the supervision of Professor Andrew Amis, I performed cadaveric studies on various aspects of knee surgery, total knee replacement and “Navigated”, computer assisted surgery and was involved in the design of new implants, navigation and joint systems.
My thesis on the subjects of Navigated computer assisted surgery and knee joint kinematics has been accepted into the University of London and Imperial College Libraries, for which I was awarded the degrees of MD(Res) and DIC(Orth Eng).
